There aren’t many people who can move from politics, Harry Potter, bodily functions and stories that probably shouldn’t be repeated in polite company and make it all equally entertaining. Miriam Margolyes is one of them, though, and she is heading to Portsmouth Guildhall with her new show, Miriam’s Full English.
After three bestselling books and several sold out tours, Miriam is hitting the road again at the ripe old age of 85. She’s not exactly known for keeping her opinions to herself, so anyone hoping for a carefully rehearsed discussion will be in for a bit of a surprise – Miriam is nothing if unpredictable!
The show is an accompaniment of her new book, Miriam’s Full English, which is about Britain and the people who live here. Having travelled around the world for her BBC documentaries, she is now exploring what makes her own country such a strange, complicated and interesting place.
The title is based on the idea that a Full English works because lots of very different things are piled together on the same plate. Miriam believes Britain is much the same. Expect stories about heroes and villains, memories from her extraordinary life and some characteristically blunt and maybe controversial thoughts about modern Britain. Politics, football, sex and almost everything else could come up along the way. With Miriam involved, there is probably no point trying to predict where the conversation might go.
And that’s before the audience gets involved.
The evening ends with a no holds barred question and answer session where no subject is off limits. That sounds brave, because Miriam has a habit of giving people much more honest answers than they were expecting – so think carefully before putting your hand up.
