Anyone in Portsmouth with a penchant for culture will be very excited by this. The opera is coming to town, and not just any old opera, but he Dnipro Opera, from Ukraine.

This opera and ballet theatre has a long-standing heritage of top-quality opera productions, and they will be performing two of them on the 12th and 13th of February: Madama Butterfly, and Carmen.

Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is the tale of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride. Set in Japan around the turn of the 20th century, it is a tragic a sorrowful story with themes of sacrifice and defiance, but is also a story of innocent love which is crushed between two wildly different cultures.

It was Puccini’s favourite opera, apparently.

Then we have Carmen, by Georges Bizet – his most popular work. A story where the thrill of fiery passion meets the jealousy and violence of 19th century Seville. Watch as the naive soldier, Don José, falls head over heels in love with Carmen, a femme fatal who ultimately ditches him for the glamorous toreador Escamillo.
